Runway incursion** solutions can be classified into two distinct categories: those that address prevention; and those that address reaction. The ROWS™ system design utilizes Patriot’s iDAQ™ data acquisition and decision support technology to provide increased airfield surface awareness for pilots and air traffic controllers to ideally prevent runway incursion incidents from happening at all--but if one does occur, to mitigate any potential disaster by improving reaction time.
The flexible platform provides "plug and play" capabilities to the FAA to exploit the lowest cost technologies available today. Remote powering and telemetry design enables the entire system to be installed quickly and non-invasively to minimize impact on operations. Multiple interfaces provide a “tool box” approach to sensor design, allowing the customer to address different sensor needs across a geographically diverse market.
ROWS™ utilizes critical point surveillance. Such a strategy will address most of the causes of runway incursions today: pilots taxiing onto or vehicles entering runways without clearance, and pilots landing or departing without clearance.

Components that make up the ROWS™ system already are used in a variety of commercial applications including advanced roadway and highway traffic management, military security and surveillance, and automatic toll collection facilities.
Beginning January 2009, Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport will be host to extended testing of the ROWS™ technology.
The ROWS Phase III implementation is the first of its kind to test a solar-powered and completely wireless sensor node to better meet the needs of even the smallest airports in the world, including the non-towered facilities. Other potential applications include temporary installations such as air shows, or emergency response situations requiring unplanned aviation services.
*Also known as the Runway Obstruction Warning System
**A runway incursion is defined as "any occurrence at an airport involving an aircraft, vehicle, person, or object on the ground that creates a collision hazard or results in the loss of separation while an aircraft is taking off, intending to take off, landing, or intending to land."

The iDAQ™ system was developed by Patriot to provide a stable platform for users with scalable Data Acquisition requirements, covering geographically distributed areas, with central "rules based" processing and decision making capabilities.
The system utilizes a single or multiple generic Data Acquisition HUB(s), supporting a diverse array of customer-tailored sensor options and interfaces. A Central Processor provides a common communications and data gathering system with "rules based" analysis of the gathered data to issue local and remote action commands, and a system status output.

The iDAQ™ technology has broad application areas. Current products are bundled with both hardware and software configured to each user’s requirements.
iDAQ™ technology currently is being tested in an application for runway safety. The Runway Occupancy Warning System (ROWS™) is being evaluated at the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport in Gulfport, MS.
